100 M downloads, Skype updates their Android app, now a Tablet-optimized and upgraded to SILK audio codec

Skype now has 280 million monthly users and mobile is an essential part of the history of Skype growth over the past few years. The company's IPhone app is regularly near the top of the rankings for free apps on Apple and Skype is still expanding to new horizons for service, for example, offers WiFi and a new app for the Tablet focused Windows 8, the partner of the EM in the Microsoft. Today, however, is a line of Android, with the release of Skype 3.0. This is the biggest upgrade of the company's Android app for over a year, and as version for Windows 8, it was built with tablets in mind.

The market of Android phone and Tablet is quite fragmented space, with multiple OEMs developing devices. While Samsung is currently dominant in smartphones, the picture is more murky for tablets, where a number of OEMs have similar size, smallish shares. (This survey yesterday from Adfonic, which contains a list of the top ten most popular Android tablets of its advertising network, stresses that State of affairs.)

But the OEMs are only one problem: there are more the size of the screen, to consider than there are OEMs working on them. However, as analysts were targeted, Android Tablet market share collectively, continues to grow against the Apple iPad, so developing for them is becoming more and more essential.

In the past, Skype is criticized for its Android app, and has been gradually-but not universal – in support of the various tablets for services such as video calling. This is a big deal, considering how important video calls have become a Skype business: in its current run rate of 300 billion annual call minutes, half of these are video calls, Skype says.

Despite these two issues Skype has managed to become the most popular video calling app on Android platform. A spokesman tells me that at this point it has been downloaded 100 million times (that means 30 million downloads from the end of June, when it reported 70 million Android download).

The new Android app finally squares this circle: capitalizing on its popularity, Skype says it will support all of the Tablet and Smartphone shapes, sizes and brands, automatic formatting to whatever screen size is to offer all of its features, including video calls.

"Now you can share the moment, a photo, or a smile of the most popular Android tablets, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Google Nexus 7, Acer Iconia, Asus Transformer Prime, Motorola Xoom and Sony 's," the company wrote in a blog post. "And with our updated look and feel, Skype looks great no matter what screen size you have – or Android phone with smaller or larger tablet display."

Similarly, Skype is trying to raise its game with the sound quality by finally adding your SILK audio codec your Android app.

The silk codec gives Skype services "wideband" sound quality and seems designed with mobile devices in mind. Its purpose is to provide good sound and consistent experience, regardless of the quality of the information.

Considering that on a mobile device, you can constantly move from cell to cell, and moving toward WiFi, voice service, which moves that seem essential. Skype's SILK codec used by 2010, and is already live on its iOS app, so this is about bringing Android up to speed with what makes Skype on other platforms.

As well as with the rest of the Skype experience on a global scale, the app now offers users the ability to sign in using their Windows credentials – a sign of how the company continues to integrate with its new owner.

Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and conversations over the Internet. Calls to other users of the Skype service are free, while calls to traditional landlines and mobile phones can be made against payment with a debit-based user account system. Skype was founded by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, who were also the founders of the Kazaa file sharing application. Skype has also become popular for its additional ...
