Arcade Sega Rally mashed up with remote control Cars For Real Racing robotic machine

Sega Rally arcade was an explosion when I was young, and it's probably still, but I have not played in a few years. But Portuguese hardware hacker Luis Sobral (aka The Arcade Man) and robotics company Artica made even better during the recent Conference VI de Sapo Codebits introducing cars unmanned in the mixture, as well as cameras and a receiver of Arduino to transmitted grab acceleration, braking and turning relayed from the arcade cabinet controls.

The end result is an arcade game that allows the riders compete in races remote-controlled, the real world - what you see on the screen is what that sees the car and your steering wheel, brake and gas monitor movements of this vehicle in the physical space. Two drivers go head-to-head, and two cameras mounted on the RC vehicles provided a front view (Sobral said proved extremely difficult for the drivers) essentially at ground level, or a highest point of view looking down on the car from the back, just as you'd get in any modern video game racing simulation.

The rear camera took a few tries to get the right according to Sobral, given that find a way to fix the camera to the desired position, ensuring that it could withstand crashes and bumps has proved to be a challenge. Finally a piece of PVC pipe has proved sustainable and stable enough to withstand the grueling races.

Discover a shortened version of the whole process in the video above. This is an incredible commitment, especially as an impromptu weekend project, and the end result looks like something I would be happy to spend hours to play. The chiptunes to the video soundtrack is pretty darn catchy, too.
